RedTitan understand the particular problems that local authorities can have working with tight budgets and printing large volumes of documents for tight deadlines. Two examples — from the London Borough of Merton and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council — illustrate solutions to different problems.

RedTitan's high-volume printing solutions for local government

Eliminating preprinted stationery stocks
RedTitan has helped the London Borough of Merton to move their document production from impact printing on preprinted sprocket-fed stationery to laser printing on plain A4 paper. New software was installed for designing documents and managing the dynamic printing on PCL-compatible printers. RedTitan have a reputation for superb technical support and consultancy; in this case, RedTitan saved Merton time by redesigning all their old forms. With core documents that now output to any printer, Merton still have complete freedom with printer procurement in the future.

Integrating different hosts and printers
A few years ago the print team at Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council decided to develop more modern applications using new Unix and Windows platforms. But managing different hosts — ICL mainframe, Unix RS6000 and PC Windows — with printout on Xerox centralised laser printers was a difficult challenge.

RedTitan has integrated printing from all Rotherham’s host applications into a single platform. Document templates are designed using RedTitan’s WYSIWYG design system, the data positions are marked up, then the ‘live’ data is merged in and viewed for proofing on local printers. At the time of printing, the templates and resources are stored on the printers and the data is sent separately and merged by the RedTitan Dynamic Document Formatter [DDF]. Everything is integrated into the existing systems and things run more smoothly for Jacqui Brunyee, Print Services Manager: ”The DDF software has been brilliant for us”.

One of Rotherham’s old problems was that their council tax runs were contracted out but if they missed their slot at the printers they risked missing the legal deadline for mailings. Now that they print the job in-house it is several days faster and they have more flexibility with timing and editing.
