This is the annual opportunity to perform in a liturgical setting the ordinaries of a sung Mass in the cathedrallike acoustic of St Augustine’s, Kilburn. Friends are welcome at the service on Sunday morning.
This year the we will look at Missa Elizabeth & Zacchariae by Lobo.
Michael writes '..for the feast of the nativity of John the Baptist we shall perform the Missa Elizabeth & Zacchariae by Duarte Lobo, a parody mass on the motet by Francisco Guerro, which we shall also study. Lobo [ c 1564 – 1646] was a Portugese composer, who was maestro de capilla at Lisbon Cathedral for at least 40 years. . . .The motet and mass are both for SATTB, so there is plenty of work for tenors. If there is time we shall also look at some of the pieces arising from the hymn Ut queant laxis, the source of Ut Re Mi Fa Sol La, which is also for this feast.’
PLEASE BOOK EARLY. There may have to be some selection to ensure a balanced choir. Tenors and basses - please don't book at the last minute as this makes it very difficult to know how many sopranos and altos to accept.
